Marion Barry is scheduled to undergo what his staff described as a “minor” surgical procedure on Friday.
The D.C. Council member and former four-term mayor will undergo the procedure, which involves the urinary tract, at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Barry’s chief of staff, Joyce Clements-Smith, said the surgery was scheduled and not performed on an emergency basis. He is expected to be hospitalized overnight, according to a two-line press release, which said he was in good health.
“He had prostate surgery sixteen (16) years ago and is cancer free,” the release said. “He had a successful kidney transplant three years ago.”
Mr. Barry, 75, was hospitalized several times in 2009, including once for complications from his kidney transplant. Later that year, he spent a week at Howard University Hospital, where he was treated for dehydration and a mild blood infection. Hours after his release, he was readmitted after a sudden allergic reaction he suffered while celebrating his release from care.
Mr. Barry currently is running for his third consecutive term on the council representing Ward 8.
