United take three in supplemental draft

D.C. United bolstered their short-handed roster with more collegiate talent Tuesday, selecting New Mexico midfielder Lance Rozeboom, Charlotte defender Charles Rodriguez and Drake midfielder Matt Kuhn in the MLS supplemental draft.

The four-round event, which featured players not picked in last week’s SuperDraft, also saw a slew of local products taken, including Virginia forward Brian Ownby (by Houston), Virginia defender Mike Volk (New York) and Maryland defender Alex Lee (Dallas).

Tim Pontius, a defender out of UC Santa Barbara and the brother of United midfielder Chris Pontius, was plucked by Seattle. With the final pick in the draft, Los Angeles selected San Diego State midfielder Justin Davies, the brother of former United striker Charlie Davies.

United, who convened for preseason Sunday ahead of their March 10 opener, have just 22 players, including Tuesday’s picks. The maximum roster size is 30 players.

Ailing Wade sits out Heat’s game vs. Spurs

MIAMI — Heat guard Dwyane Wade did not play Tuesday night against San Antonio because of a sprained right ankle. Wade has been dealing with at least three lower-leg injuries in recent weeks, and sprained the ankle late in Miami’s loss Friday at Denver. He also has been battling a sore left foot and a strained calf muscle.

Tuesday’s game marked the fourth Wade has missed this season. Miami won all three of the previous contests without the 2006 NBA finals MVP, who turned 30 on Tuesday.

Penguins’ Letang back on ice following concussion

PITTSBURGH — Penguins defenseman Kris Letang returned to practice on Tuesday for the first time since suffering a concussion in late November. Letang has been cleared to play by team doctors.

Letang was playing arguably the best hockey of his career before taking an elbow to the head in a 4-3 win over the Canadiens on Nov. 26. He returned to the game and scored the overtime winner but woke up the next morning with a headache. The Penguins have struggled in his absence, going 9-11-0 and dropping into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
