NAME: Jerry Yang
AGE: 43
NET WORTH: $1.1 billion; holds 3.6 percent stake in Yahoo Inc.
FAMILY HISTORY: Born in Taiwan, married to Akiko Yamazaki.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering, Stanford University, where he has been a trustee since 2005. Yamazaki is a fellow Stanford graduate.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Started Yahoo in 1994 with fellow Stanford doctoral candidate David Filo as a place to keep track of their favorite websites. The company incorporated in 1995 and went public in 1996. By its 10th anniversary, it was the world’s most popular website with an audience of 345 million, about half registered users.
Yang served as de facto CEO for the company’s first year, yielding the reins to Tim Koogle in 1995. He returned as CEO from 2007 to 2009 and fended off a takeover effort by Microsoft that is now seen as investors’ last good chance to sell out. Resigned Tuesday from the company’s board of directors and gave up his other titles, including Chief Yahoo.
