I think an apology from President Obama for the burning of Korans in Afghanistan was an appropriate response, but one apology was enough (“Probe of Afghan Koran burning nearing completion,” Web, Wednesday).

However, the fact that Mr. Obama did not demand a reciprocal apology from Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the killing of two of our soldiers demonstrates a lack of courage and a naive understanding of the role of president of the United States.

Whatever peace agreement we make with the Taliban will be torn up as soon as we leave. It would not matter if we stayed there another 10 years or another 100 years. Nothing will change in that country until the Afghan people themselves find the will to make it happen.
