PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA (AP) - A renowned conductor from South Korea is in Pyongyang to rehearse with North Korean musicians before their upcoming performance in France.

Maestro Chung Myung-whun of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra landed in the North Korean capital on Tuesday.

Chung is to rehearse with North Korea’s Unhasu Orchestra before they head to Paris for a rare joint performance with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra next month.

Chung had been seeking to organize joint performances involving musicians from rival North Korea and South Korea. Instead, he arranged to bring the North Korean orchestra to France, where he also serves as music director for the Radio France Philharmonic.

The two Koreas do not have diplomatic relations, and the Korean peninsula remains in a technical state of war.
