Christopher Newport University’s invitation to GOP Gov. Bob McDonnell to give the school’s commencement address in May has resulted in backlash largely among people who do not support the governor’s conservative stance on social issues.

More than 400 people identifying themselves as students or alumni have signed a petition on the website Change.org demanding Mr. McDonnell not be allowed to speak.

The university, in the Hampton Roads area, has said it is “honored” to host the governor during commencement exercises that also will include a celebration of the university’s 50th anniversary.

Christopher Newport University is a public university of about 5,000 students.
