OPINION:
President Obama’s reluctance to use the military option against Iran while at the same time trying to dissuade Israel from attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities has only one objective, as spelled out in your Tuesday editorial “Obama’s gas-price spike.” As the piece states, “If gas prices continue their upward trajectory until Election Day, voters are likely to look to a new leader to heal their wounded wallets.”
All actions taken by Mr. Obama on the international front are designed to avoid an economic catastrophe that would interfere with his re-election chances.
For Israel, there is no doubt that Iran presents an existential threat and moral action is necessary from the United States. We don’t need ineffective sanctions; rather, we are obligated to take military action to remove any and all nuclear weaponry from Iran.
Unfortunately, Mr. Obama’s re-election concerns trump his allegiance to our allies.
