A man was fatally stabbed Friday morning in front of a homeless shelter on New York Avenue in Northeast D.C., causing police to shut down eastbound lanes of the busy thoroughfare for about two hours.
The stabbing was reported close to 11 a.m. in the 1300 block of New York Avenue, Metropolitan Police Department officials said. Police have a man in custody for the killing but have not identified either the person in custody or the victim, police spokesman Officer Araz Alali said Friday.
Investigators walked in and out from Unity Health Care’s homeless shelter and collected evidence from the middle of New York Avenue on Friday morning. A black taxi van sat parked in front of the building, with yellow evidence placards placed by the driver side door.
Police directed a heavy flow of traffic through industrial side streets and around the crime scene until the road reopened at around 12:30 p.m.
