Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday condemned in “the strongest possible terms, the bombing of an Israeli diplomatic vehicle in India and the attempted attack on Israeli Embassy personnel in Georgia.”
A magnetic bomb attached to an Israeli Embassy car by a motorcyclist injured four people in New Delhi, including the wife of an Israeli Defense Ministry official.
A similar attack was foiled in Tiblisi when police defused a bomb found under an Israeli diplomat’s car in the Georgian capital.
The New Delhi incident bore striking resemblance to the series of bombings that have targeted Iranian nuclear scientists during the past two years, including one last month in which two men on a motorcycle attached a deadly bomb to a scientist’s car in Tehran.
No group has claimed credit for the bombings in Iran, or for the attacks that targeted Israelis on Monday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Iranians were behind the incidents on Monday. Iranian officials denied any involvement.
In Washington, Mrs. Clinton asserted that “the scourge of terrorism is an affront to the entire international community.”
“The United States places a high priority on the safety and security of diplomatic personnel around the world and we stand ready to assist with any investigation of these cowardly actions,” she said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured personnel in New Delhi and their loved ones.”
U.S. officials said neither India nor Georgia had yet asked for assistance in investigating the incidents.
