BUENOS AIRES — Argentina is expected to denounce Great Britain before the United Nations Friday for “introducing nuclear arms” into the escalating conflict over the Falkland Islands.
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez made the announcement Thursday after British media reported that a Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine was sailing to the island where Britain’s Prince William is deployed in military exercises.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Fernandez said her government would condemn London before the U.N. General Assembly for “militarizing the South Atlantic.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday that the 3,000 residents of the islands would have London’s backing for as long as they chose to remain British.
For weeks now, Buenos Aires and London have been in an escalating war of words as the 30th anniversary of the Falkland Islands war approaches, and as oil companies talk of potentially massive offshore oil deposits inside the islands’ basin.
But many of the 3,000 residents of the Islands, as well as many everyday people here, dismiss the saber-rattling as a political circus that has little bearing on everyday realities.
