BEREA, Ohio — Trent Richardson’s ailing left knee may be more seriously injured than the Cleveland Browns thought

The team issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday saying that the running back, picked No. 3 overall in April’s draft, will see a specialist Thursday.

The statement says: “Trent Richardson is traveling to Pensacola, Fla., where he will have his left knee further evaluated by Dr. James Andrews tomorrow.”

Richardson, who played at Alabama, had an MRI in Cleveland on Tuesday. Results have not been revealed. He is going to see Andrews for a second opinion. Andrews has been Richardson’s surgeon since the running back was a high school star. He performed the surgery to repair a torn meniscus in February.

Swelling in the knee is not uncommon after such an operation and Richardson wore a protective sleeve on the leg during organized team activities and minicamps in May and June.

The Feb. 3 surgery caused him to miss some portions of the NFL combine.

Nevertheless, Cleveland traded up to select Richardson and signed him to a four-year, $20.5 million contract.

Around the league

EAGLES: Andy Reid returned to camp a day after his 29-year-old son’s funeral. He plans to coach the preseason opener against Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

LIONS: Safety Louis Delmas had surgery on his left knee Tuesday. The team said Delmas had surgery to “assist in his recovery from knee soreness he developed early in camp.”

GIANTS: Cornerback Terrell Thomas aid Tuesday he might need from three to eight weeks before he is ready to get back on the field after “aggravating” his surgically repaired right ACL.

NFL: Shannon Eastin could be the first of several female game officials in the league, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. Eastin is a replacement line judge who will make her NFL debut in Thursday night’s Green Bay at San Diego exhibition game.

The regular officials are locked out by the league after their contract expired.
