NEW YORK (AP) - A Yahoo News bureau chief fired for saying Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife were “happy to have a party with black people drowning” says he’s “profoundly sorry.”
Former Washington bureau chief David Chalian made the remark Tuesday while the Romneys were at the Republican National Convention in Florida and Hurricane Isaac was approaching Louisiana.
A Yahoo spokeswoman said Wednesday the remark was inappropriate and doesn’t represent Yahoo’s views. She says Yahoo is apologizing to Romney and his supporters.
Chalian made the remark at a live microphone before Yahoo began its live coverage of the GOP convention. Yahoo is streaming coverage in association with ABC News.
There are floodwaters in parts of Louisiana but no reports of drownings.
