ANNAPOLIS (AP) – Maryland transportation officials have declared the Chesapeake Bay bridge safe for travel after unscheduled inspections that snarled morning commuter traffic.

The inspections forced the closure of the westbound span of the bridge Tuesday morning, resulting in huge traffic backups.

The westbound span was reopened to traffic at noon.

Officials said the westbound lanes of the bridge were closed Monday night after workers reported unusual vertical movement.
