HOUSTON — Roger Clemens signed with the Sugar Land (Texas) Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League on Monday and he is expected to start for the minor league team Saturday at home against Bridgeport. Clemens and Skeeters manager Gary Gaetti, 50, have been talking about this “for months,” Clemens’ agent said.
Clemens, who was acquitted in June of charges he lied to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs, hasn’t played for a team since pitching for the Yankees in 2007 at the age of 45. He went 6-6 in 18 games with a 4.18 ERA that season.
Season-ending surgery set for Boston’s Crawford
BOSTON — Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford will have season-ending surgery on his left elbow Thursday.
Crawford has been playing with pain since coming off the disabled list last month and will have Tommy John surgery.
Crawford was a major disappointment last season, his first with Boston after signing a $142 million, seven-year contract. He batted .255 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI and had only 18 steals after swiping 107 bases combined in the previous two seasons with Tampa Bay. He missed the first 89 games this season while recovering from left wrist surgery.
He partially tore his elbow ligament in April while rehabbing, slowing his return. Crawford was activated from the disabled list July 16 and was batting .282 with three homers and 19 RBI. He is expected to be sidelined six to nine months.
Phillies bring Polanco off the disabled list
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have activated third baseman Placido Polanco from the disabled list and sent infielder Hector Luna to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Polanco, who was sidelined with lower back inflammation since July 23, was in the starting lineup and batting seventh against Cincinnati on Monday night. Polanco is batting .255 with two homers and 19 RBI. Kevin Frandsen started 20 games in Polanco’s absence and is hitting .329 with a homer and six RBI.

Bogut expects to be ready by the season opener
OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State Warriors center Andrew Bogut expects to be in the lineup for the season opener Oct. 31 at Phoenix after undergoing anklesurgery this spring on his ankle. How much he plays during the exhibition schedule, he’s still not sure.
