President Obama and Republican vice-presidential pick Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, both have been in Iowa this week. The president asked the people of Iowa to ask Mr. Ryan why the Republicans in the House are holding up the Farm Relief Bill.

The Republican House passed this bill almost two weeks ago, before leaving town, and it is being held up in the Democratic Senate, where it will languish until the Senate returns to work in September, so the obvious question is: Why did the president made this untrue statement? It seems to me that there are only two logical conclusions. Either the president is so out of touch with his own administration he does not know the House passed the bill, or he decided to tell the people of Iowa (and the nation) an untruth in his effort to get re-elected.

I think we are all reluctant to call our president a liar, but as I listen to his recent speeches, I want to shout, as a congressman did during the president’s 2009 State of the Union speech, “You lie!” We have to get over our reluctance fast and call the president and his supporters liars when they lie. Any political candidate for any office who is willing to distort the truth and lie to the people to get elected deserves only to be kicked to the curb.
