A Virginia State Police trooper injured by a drunk driver was recovering Sunday, a trooper spokeswoman said.

Police trooper K.S. Fleenor was recuperating from injuries after his patrol car was rear-ended by another vehicle on I-495 near Tysons Corner, according to a police statement.

According to a statement issued by the state police, just after midnight on Saturday, Mr. Fleenor stopped in a northbound left travel lane along the highway to help a tow truck remove a damaged car. He was in his patrol car — which was flashing its lights — when another vehicle driven by 30-year-old Christina Hirt of Alexandria plowed into his car, pinning it behind the damaged vehicle being towed.

Mr. Fleenor and the tow truck operator were taken to a hospital and released.

Ms. Hirt refused treatment, the report stated, and was charged with driving under the influence.
