SHOWING THE WAY: Google’s maps for mobile devices running on the company’s Android software are trying to make it easier for people to find their way around the mass transit systems in nearly 500 cities.

THE UPGRADES: The latest version of maps for Android includes more details about the schedules at different stations and enables users to focus on directions for one form of public transportation, such as a subway, while excluding other alternatives such as buses.

LOOMING BATTLE: Google Inc. is bracing for a rival mapping system on Apple Inc.’s iPhone and iPad due out this fall.
