AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods salvaged a bogey out of a drive deep into the trees on the 18th hole Thursday and closed out the first round of the Masters at even-par 72.
Lee Westwood made the turn at 4 under, one in front of Paul Lawrie, who had the lead in the clubhouse at 3-under 69.
For most of the day, it looked as if Henrik Stenson would celebrate his 36th birthday with the lead. The Swede made two eagles and was at 6-under par until hitting his tee shot into the woods on 18. It started a meltdown that ended in a quadruple-bogey 8.
Stenson finished at 1-under 71.
