NEW ORLEANS — On the same day the NFL heard the Saints’ appeals in their hits-for-cash scandal, a recording of Gregg Williams emerged that purports to capture the disgraced defensive coordinator telling players to “put a lick” on 49ers receiver Kyle Williams to see if he had lingering effects from a concussion.
Filmmaker Sean Pamphilon, who had access to Saints meetings for a documentary on football, posted the audio on his website.
Pamphilon initially shared the content with Yahoo Sports, telling the website that while he was not bothered by much of Williams’ profanity-laced speech, he was troubled by comments about the previously concussed player.
“I thought, ’Did he just say that?’ ” Pamphilon said in an article posted Thursday. “That was the red flag for me.”
Williams, who is suspended indefinitely for his admitted role overseeing a bounty system that offered Saints defenders payment for painful hits, did not respond to a phone message and email left with his foundation in Missouri on Thursday.
Ravens extend Webb’s contract
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb agreed to terms on a five-year extension Thursday that includes a $10 million signing bonus and a $5 million option bonus.
Webb, who already was signed for next year, is now locked in for the next six seasons. He intercepted a career-high five passes in the regular season and broke a team record with three interceptions in the playoffs. He had a career-high 68 tackles and 20 pass deflections and emerged as one of the NFL’s top young cornerbacks.
Bengals’ Simpson gets jail time
COVINGTON, Ky. — Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in jail and three years’ probation on a drug-related charge.
A judge in Covington reduced the jail time from the 60 days recommended by prosecutors in their plea agreement with Simpson, now a free agent after four seasons with the Bengals.
Simpson pleaded guilty March 1 to the felony charge resulting from about 2 pounds of marijuana shipped to his northern Kentucky home in September.

TEXANS: Houston re-signed free agent safety Quintin Demps. The 5-foot-11, 206-pound Demps had a career year with the Texans last season with 22 tackles, two interceptions and two passes defended in nine games.
PATRIOTS: New England signed free agent linebacker Bobby Carpenter, 28, who has played six seasons for Dallas, Miami and Detroit. He originally was a first-round pick by the Cowboys from Ohio State.
CARDINALS: Arizona reached agreement on a one-year contract with free agent free safety James Sanders. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Sanders played for New England for his first six seasons before going to Atlanta last year.
COLTS: Indianapolis signed free agent defensive tackle Brandon McKinney. In 61 career games with the San Diego Chargers (2006-07) and Baltimore Ravens (2008-11), the 6-2, 345-pound McKinney had 82 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
COWBOYS: Former Dallas assistant coach Joe Avezzano died of a heart attack in Italy on Thursday. Avezzano, 68, had moved to Milan earlier this year to coach an Italian Football League team, the Milan Seamen.
