While some political analysts speculate that Mitt Romney’s massive wealth could hurt him with working-class voters this fall, others think the Republican presidential hopeful’s wild success could turn out to be one of his greatest assets.
Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said Mr. Romney can and should cast himself as a role model.
“The American people don’t want to vote for a loser,” Mr. Boehner said. “They don’t want to vote for someone who hasn’t been successful. I think Mitt Romney has an opportunity to show the American people that they, too, can succeed.”
The speaker also bashed President Obama, arguing that in recent months he’s created political battles where none truly exist, such as the ongoing fight over student loan interest rates.
“He’s diminishing the presidency by picking fights, going after straw men every day,” Mr. Boehner said. “And then they pick this student loan fight, where there is no fight. The presidency is bigger than this.”
House Republicans support taking money from Mr. Obama’s health care reform bill and redirecting it to the student loan program to keep rates from doubling this summer. Democrats want to pay for it in other ways, such as eliminating subsidies for oil and gas companies.
