SANAA, Egypt — FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III held talks Tuesday with Yemen’s new president on the fight against al Qaeda militants in the impoverished Arab nation, an official said.
Yahya al-Arasi, a spokesman for President Abed Rabo Mansour Hadi, said Mr. Mueller and the Yemeni leader had a 45-minute meeting in which they discussed the battle against al Qaeda, particularly in the southern Abyan province.
The meeting came hours after news that Yemeni government forces had fought their way into the center of Zinjibar, Abyan’s provincial capital, which had been held by al Qaeda since May last year.
The United States says al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch is the terror network’s most dangerous.
