AUBURN, Ala. — Terri Williams-Flournoy, who led Georgetown to the past three NCAA tournaments, is taking over as women’s basketball coach at Auburn.
Auburn announced Monday that Williams-Flournoy will replace Nell Fortner, who resigned after the season.
The Tigers are trying to match her success in getting to the NCAA tournament, which they haven’t managed since winning the 2008-09 Southeastern Conference title.
“Coach Williams-Flourney has achieved success at every level of her basketball career as a player, assistant and head coach,” athletic director Jay Jacobs said. “She has an understanding of what it takes to be successful in the Southeastern Conference and brings a tremendous desire to win championships at Auburn.”
Auburn will formally introduce Williams-Flournoy at a Tuesday news conference.
The former Penn State player led Georgetown to the program’s best four-year run starting in 2008, going 93-41 and winning at least one game in all three NCAA tournament trips during that span. The Hoyas made it to the regional finals in 2011.
Williams-Flournoy posted a 143-104 record in eight seasons with the Hoyas.
She started her career in 1992 with a four-year stint as an assistant for Georgetown, followed by stops at Georgia and Southwest Missouri State before getting the Hoyas’ head coaching job.
She has been part of three programs that have made a combined 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including Georgia’s run to the Final Four in 1999.
The Hoyas are coming off a 23-9 season when they made it to the NCAA’s second round. They entered the tournament ranked sixth nationally in field goal percentage defense and eighth in scoring defense.
Williams-Flournoy was an assistant coach for the gold medal-winning Team USA at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China during the summer of 2011.
