ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (AP) — A soldier who died 42 years ago while protecting his comrades finally is getting the Medal of Honor.
President Obama will honor the late Leslie Sabo of Ellwood City on May 16 at the White House.
Sabo was 22 when he died while trying to save fellow soldiers from a North Vietnamese ambush in May 1970. He distributed ammo and threw himself onto a wounded comrade to shield him from a grenade blast.
Sabo also charged an enemy position, drawing fire away from his comrades, killing several enemy soldiers and forcing others to retreat.
Sabo’s widow, Rose Mary Sabo Brown, and his brother George will attend the White House ceremony.
