While the name Watergate may be synonymous with political scandal for many people, Washingtonians know the Watergate complex as an elegant cooperative with some of the city’s most spectacular homes.

The distinctive curving buildings on the edge of the Potomac River have become part of the iconic landscape of the District and the curving balconies and architecturally interesting residences have long been sought-after real estate.

Residents of the Watergate, including a variety of well-known members of the Washington elite, enjoy a location within walking distance of the Kennedy Center, Georgetown and Foggy Bottom, as well as the restaurants and retail component of the Watergate complex itself.

Watergate residents can use concierge services and an on-site beauty salon, as well as a swimming pool. Joggers and walkers have immediate access to paths along the Potomac, and can rent boats and bikes at the Thompson Boat Center adjacent to the Watergate.

Some of the homes within the Watergate have been created by combining more than one residence to expand the living space, as well as to take advantage of multiple views. The home in units 404 and 405 of Watergate South at 700 New Hampshire Ave. NW is on the market for $3,795,000. It has approximately 3,750 square feet of living space and is wrapped in balconies with panoramic views of the Potomac River, Key Bridge, the Georgetown skyline, the Kennedy Center and the landscaped inner Watergate courtyard.

This residence has been designed and renovated by architects and designers to match the home’s state-of-the-art amenities and finishes with the spectacular setting and views. The home has three bedrooms, three full baths and a powder room along with numerous spaces for entertaining and relaxing.

For an elegant evening, the reception begins in the circular foyer, which has a dramatic oak floor with walnut inlay and circular molding on the ceiling to emphasize the shape of the room. Crown molding and sconces line the hall to the living room, a 26- by 15.9-foot space nearly surrounded by new floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto the wraparound balcony. Adjacent to the living room is the library, which has a floor-to-ceiling glass door to the balcony and custom-built cabinets, bookshelves and a dry bar.

On the evening of a formal dinner party, guests can be directed from the main hall to the dining room vestibule, a distinctive room with double curving walls and hand-painted wallpaper that leads into the dining room. The dining room itself has glass doors to the balcony and crown molding. Near the vestibule is a sophisticated powder room with marble flooring and a marble pedestal sink.

For more casual evenings, the center-island kitchen and family room will be the gathering space. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors in this area offer some of the best Key Bridge and Potomac River views in the house. The kitchen has granite counters, custom-designed furniture-grade cabinetry, a coffered ceiling, and space for a breakfast table and plenty of seating. Hardwood flooring extends throughout the home into the kitchen and family room.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the third bedroom or den, which has its own glass door to the balcony, two closets, built-in cabinets and a private marble, stone and glass bath. On the opposite side of the foyer is a second bedroom with a sliding glass door to a balcony, built-in cabinets and a private marble bath with a soaking tub and shower.

The master bedroom suite has plush wall-to-wall carpet, glass doors to the eastern-facing balcony and a separate dressing area with two walk-in closets. The sumptuous master bath includes a walk-in shower room with floor-to-ceiling glass tile walls and glass doors, a soaking tub, a marble bench and double vanities with marble counters.

This home also has a large laundry room, a walk-in closet off the foyer and several other closets. The home comes with four parking spaces in the Watergate garage.
