ISTANBUL (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday congratulated the people of Myanmar for participating in the election process — a first for many of them.
Mrs. Clinton said that the country’s leaders should move ahead with transparency and other reforms but that it’s too early to know what lies ahead despite progress in recent months.
Mrs. Clinton spent most of Sunday dealing with the situation in Syria and the fate of its leader, so the landmark election in Myanmar is a reminder that even most oppressive governments can reform and that even the closed societies can open.
Mrs. Clinton said at a news conference in Turkey that she holds hope for the people of Myanmar, which is also known as Burma.
