INDIANAPOLIS — Peyton Manning’s streak is over. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback will not play Sunday in the season opener at Houston, bringing an end to his streak of 227 starts, including the playoffs.
Kerry Collins, 38, will start against the Manning’s streak is the second longest among NFL quarterbacks behind only Brett Favre, whose 297-game run ended last season just before he called it a career.
Collins, who was brought out of retirement just two weeks ago to run the Colts’ pass-heavy offense, has been preparing as though he would start.
During his streak, Manning, 35, has led the Colts to 11 playoff appearances, 11 double-digit win seasons, eight division crowns, two AFC titles and the first Super Bowl championship in the franchise’s Indianapolis era.
He had neck surgery to repair a nerve May 23, but the recovery has taken much longer than the expected 6-8 weeks that would have put him back on the field for the start of training camp.
Foster unsure if he’ll play
HOUSTON — Texans running back Arian Foster is not sure if he’ll be able to play against Indianapolis because of his hamstring injury.
Foster, the 2010 NFL rushing champion, hurt his left hamstring early in training camp, then aggravated it in the preseason game in San Francisco on Aug. 27. He will be evaluated again Thursday.
Backups Derrick Ward, Ben Tate and Steve Slaton shared the snaps in practice in Wednesday.
Injuries mount for Cowboys
IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys’ two biggest areas of concern going into the opener cornerback and offensive line just became more of a problem.
Starting cornerback Terence Newman didn’t practice Wednesday and likely won’t play Sunday at the New York Jets because of a lingering groin problem, and fellow starting cornerback Mike Jenkins left practice with a knee injury. Starting right tackle Tyron Smith also left practice with a knee injury.
