OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO (AP) - A Burkina Faso prosecutor says two midwives have been jailed amid accusations they left a woman to die in labor while they watched television.
Sita Traore’s Aug. 31 death prompted angry protests in which demonstrators torched a maternity ward.
She was expecting twins. Her husband says they all died at the clinic in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso. It was the latest in a series of deaths of women in Burkina Faso maternity wards.
The death prompted a rare promise from the government of the West African nation that it would take action.
Deputy public prosecutor Roger Zoungrana said Wednesday that the two midwives were jailed Tuesday and would soon face trial.
Traore’s husband told the AP that the midwives left his wife alone in a locked room where she died after falling from her bed.
