WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Nationals reactivated right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg from the 60-day disabled list in time for him to make Tuesday’s start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Strasburg, who underwent Tommy John surgery a little more than a year ago, received a long standing ovation as he made his way from the bullpen to the dugout shortly before the game. The crowd was sparse as the game began because of daylong rains that had threatened to postpone his much-anticipated comeback.
Strasburg last pitched on Aug. 21, 2010, when his elbow popped in a game against Philadelphia. He had ligament replacement surgery on Sept. 3 and made six minor league rehab starts this year, going 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA with 29 strikeouts and three walks.
The Nationals also recalled right-handed pitchers Yunesky Maya and Craig Stammen, left-handed pitcher Atahualpa Severino and outfielder Corey Brown from Triple-A Syracuse. They purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Brad Peacock and infielder Steve Lombardozzi from Syracuse. Washington moved right-handed pitcher Cole Kimball to the 60-Day Disabled List and DL, released right-handed pitcher Adam Carr and designated right-handed pitcher Garrett Mock for assignment.
