SOUTH BEND, IND. (AP) - Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Sunday he and his staff are still evaluating who will start at quarterback following a stunning 23-20 season opening loss to South Florida.
Dayne Crist struggled and was pulled after a two-hour and 10-minute halftime that was extended because of severe weather. With the Irish trailing 16-0 at intermission, Kelly turned to Tommy Rees and he played well in the second half.
Kelly said after looking at film and having a meeting with his coaches later Sunday, the quarterbacks will be told who the starter is. Crist beat Rees out in a preseason camp competition but drew Kelly’s ire on the sidelines Saturday.
The Irish had five turnovers and eight penalties. They play at Michigan this Saturday.
