Beau Bridges: Wealthy have ’responsibility’ to pay more

Emmy-award winning actor Beau Bridges told the Daily Caller that wealthy Americans have “the responsibility” to pay more in taxes and “help people out that need support.”

Mr. Bridges was asked if he would mind paying higher taxes, as President Obama has proposed in his deficit-reduction plan.

“I think if you’ve been blessed … part of that comes [with] the responsibility to help people out that need support so … I’m for that - that tax on the wealthy,” he told the Caller in Washington on Thursday.

He continued, “No, I think, from what I’m hearing, the people that are getting taxed the most are kind of the middle-income people.”

The Navy Memorial honored Beau Bridges, his brother, Jeff, and his late father, Lloyd, with the Lone Sailor Award at the National Building Museum in the District for their service in the U.S. Coast Guard. Jeff Bridges was unable to attend the ceremony, but Beau Bridges shared his thoughts on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“What we all pray for is peace - that’s what I pray for and I understand that sometimes that’s not an easy … outcome, so I support the people that are there protecting us and striving for. And I think most anybody, even if you’re on the front lines fighting, you want a peaceful conclusion in the end,” he said.

“It’s a very conflicted, crazy situation in the Middle East and in other places in the world. I don’t think any of it’s an easy solution but we’re the human race. We’ve survived hundreds of years so we need to get it together and find out how we can all can all exist on this planet together and to respect one another.”

Bruni-Sarkozy: French ’uninterested’ in pregnancy

French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is undoubtedly thrilled to be expecting her second child, but the 43-year-old says her pregnancy is a nonstory to the people of France.

“There isn’t much to say,” the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy recently told BBC News. “So many women are expecting children and giving birth, and it’s so uninteresting for French people.”

Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy, who fueled pregnancy rumors earlier this year when she shielded her belly in front of photographers, confirmed in July that she was expecting when she flaunted her pregnant stomach in a swimsuit snapshot.

“It’s great news for me, but it’s also something very banal,” the first lady told the BBC, adding that her superstitious beliefs also have contributed to her silence on the pregnancy.

“I’m superstitious, so yes, I’ve been very careful,” Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy said.

Earlier this month, Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy told TF1 program Sept a Huit that she will prohibit the press from printing photographs of her baby.

“I will do everything to protect this infant, and I’ll be absolutely rigorous,” Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy said. “I will never show photos of this child. I will never expose this child.”

A proud “mother hen,” Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy said she developed her strong views on the matter after taking her firstborn Aurelien on a public date in 2008 with Mr. Sarkozy, her then-husband-to-be.

“My eldest son was exposed once, not in a public situation but in a private one, and it was a great error,” Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy said. “I should never have taken my son. … I should have foreseen there would be photographers.”

’Playboy Club’ actor comes out as gay

Controversial NBC show “The Playboy Club” now has another reason to generate buzz: One of its actors came out of the closet Monday.

Sean Maher, who plays a character with the same first name on the television drama, told Entertainment Weekly that he’s been keeping a big secret for the 14 years he has worked in Hollywood.

“I’ve never discussed it publicly,” Mr. Maher, who appeared in the TV series “Firefly,” said of his sexuality. “I’ve never been asked about it publicly, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t paint a different picture.”

The father of two adopted children lives in Southern California with his partner of nearly nine years.

“It’s so liberating,” Mr. Maher said. “It was interesting to be coming to have a conversation that I was always afraid to have. … This is my coming-out ball. I’ve been dying to do this.”

Mr. Maher comes forward about being gay at a time when highly publicized, popular TV shows such as “Glee” feature, and often embrace, homosexuality, but the ’90s didn’t come with the same kind of representation. When Mr. Maher graduated from New York University in 1997 and relocated to Los Angeles, he was advised to date women for his image.

Preparing Mr. Maher for his role on “Ryan Caulfield: Year One,” publicists said his having a girlfriend for the tabloids could help the series.

“They’re telling me, ’You know, gosh, we’d really appreciate it if you could keep your girlfriend on the side because we want to appeal to the female demographic of the show,’ ” Mr. Maher said. “At that moment, I didn’t think to say, ’Oh, I’m gay,’ because right before I left New York, I had my manager tell me: ’You need to get a girl on your arm or people will start talking.’ I remember telling him: ’I’m gay.’ He had no idea. And he said: ’All the more reason to get a girl on your arm.’ My agent was also like, ’It’s best if you keep your options open. Maybe bisexual?’ “

To protect his career, Mr. Maher didn’t say a word about being gay.

“I have these beautiful children and this extraordinary family,” Mr. Mayer said. “What would [my child] think if I said, ’Oh honey, you can’t come with me to work because they don’t know I have an adopted daughter and they don’t know that I’m gay.’ My children and our family, I’ve really never been as proud of anything in my life. I couldn’t be happier at this point in my life, and I feel like we’ve created this pretty extraordinary family.”
