NEW YORK (AP) - J.D. Drew has been activated off the 15-day disabled list and inserted into the Boston Red Sox lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees.
Drew had been out with a right shoulder injury since last playing July 19. Manager Terry Francona said before the Red Sox lost Sunday’s opener 6-2 that Drew was feeling great but that it was unlikely he’d play in the twinbill.
With Boston’s AL wild-card lead over Tampa Bay down to a half-game, Drew replaced Conor Jackson in right field. Jackson went 0 for 3 in the opener.
Drew is batting just .219 with four homers and 21 RBIs in the final year of a $70 million, five-year contract.
