Now that the 2012 election is less than 14 months away, President Obama suddenly defends the Jewish state, contrary to his previous actions, which many GOP candidates said constituted throwing Israel under the bus (“Palestinian protesters slam Obama over U.N. speech,” Web, Thursday).

This sudden but welcome support for Israel from the president comes as one of the opening volleys in his re-election campaign and stems not from a love of either Israel or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The American Jewish electorate, as well as other supporters of Israel, should ask the question of how Mr. Obama will treat the Jewish state if he is re-elected. Based on his previous statements and actions, the answer is obvious: He will return to his old ways, making it difficult for Israel to continue to exist.

With new authority, I would expect the reappearance of his pro-Arab advisers and a marked tilt in that direction.
