INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Michael Andretti’s team will run Chevrolet’s new V-6 twin turbocharged engines during the 2012 IndyCar season.
The decision, announced Friday, reunites Andretti with a manufacturer that has played a role in his family’s success. Michael Andretti and his father, Mario, combined for 20 wins using Chevys from 1987-1991.
Michael Andretti set the single-season record with eight wins in 1991 with Chevy when he also claimed the points title. Mario Andretti won Chevys first race in 1987.
Andretti Autosport has had 39 wins, including two Indianapolis 500s, and three driver championships since 2003.
Roger Penske’s team also has signed on with Chevy. Target Chip Ganassi and A.J. Foyt Racing will stay with Honda.
