Some member states at the United Nations are now complaining about being subjected to undue pressure and intimidation from Palestinians wishing to strong-arm members into supporting the Palestinian bid for independence in coming days (” ’Diplomacy of September,’ ” Commentary, Tuesday).

This bid for recognition also seeks to enforce the ethnic cleansing of all Jews from a future Palestinian state. It is disturbing to see that the influence of the petrodollar is being used to sacrifice the Jewish state of Israel upon the altar of political expediency.

No matter what happens at the United Nations in New York this week, the only thing that will change is the arena in which the conflict will be played out. All previous negotiations will be invalid. The situation will not be resolved and the conflict will not end. Instead, it will deteriorate and spread. What was once called the “peace process” will have been circumvented. Palestinian terrorism will have been appeased and Israeli security ignored. Conflict is inevitable.

There are powerful forces rising within the international community whose sole aim is to deny the Jewish people their heritage by delegitimizing their very existence. These forces are aligning themselves with policies that ultimately seek the eradication of Israel itself.
