ATHENS, GREECE (AP) - The former chairman of Greek club Kavala has been arrested for alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal after three months on the run.
Poilce say Makis Psomiadis was arrested Thursday at a seaside home south of Athens on suspicion of membership in a criminal organization, blackmail, bribery and match fixing.
Topflight clubs Kavala and Volos were thrown out of Greece’s professional leagues this summer over the match-fixing scandal. They launched an unsuccessful appeal.
Psomiadis, led in handcuffs to Athens police headquarters, described the match-fixing allegations as “fairytales” and described himself as a “political prisoner.”
