Fairfax County employees will receive their first pay raise in three years, under a measure approved by the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
The board had set aside money in April to increase compensation by 1.5 percent, but several developments — including the dismissal of a lawsuit against the county — freed up money for the board to go above that rate.
The pay increase of up to 2 percent will begin Sept. 24 and will cost the county $3.7 million. More than $28 million of unspent 2011 money, or carryover funds, will be put in a reserve fund to help prepare for fiscal 2013.
County Executive Anthony H. Griffin has been authorized to use part of the reserve for countywide cleanup and recovery efforts related to the Sept. 8 floods, which wreaked havoc in the county and around the D.C. area.
