NORTON, MASS. (AP) - Phil Mickelson once carried two drivers at the Masters and no drivers at a U.S. Open. Even more surprising was Thursday at the Deutsche Bank Championship when he tried using a belly putter.
The longer putters have been getting more attention this year, especially after Keegan Bradley became the first player to win a major using one at the PGA Championship.
Mickelson, renowned for a silky stroke, has been struggling for years on the shorter putts. He has said last week that he wouldn’t rule out trying a belly putter one day. Mickelson says he struggled in the pro-am at the TPC Boston but started to get the hang of it.
Asked if he would use it in the first round Friday, he says he’s not opposed to trying something new.
