Seattle backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst led the Seahawks to a comeback victory over the New York Giants after starter Tarvaris Jackson was sidelined midway through the third quarter Sunday.
Jackson gained 11 yards on a designed run, but came up holding his right shoulder and upper chest. Coach Pete Carroll said Jackson had a pectoral muscle problem and would undergo an MRI exam back in Seattle.
Jackson was replaced by Whitehurst, who rallied the Seahawks to a 36-25 victory. Jackson was 15 for 22 for 166 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Houston linebacker Mario Williams left the Texans’ loss to Oakland, also with an injured pectoral muscle.
Williams appeared to be hurt while sacking Jason Campbell with about five minutes left in the first quarter.
Williams, the top overall pick in the 2006 draft, moved from defensive end to linebacker this season in Houston’s new 3-4 defense. He has five sacks and a forced fumble.
“He said he felt like something popped, but I don’t know,” Houston defensive end Antonio Smith said. “The only thing that concerned me is that he didn’t come back. I think that he will be all right.”
The Green Bay Packers lost another offensive tackle when Chad Clifton left their win over the Atlanta Falcons with a hamstring injury.
Clifton was bowled over by Falcons defensive end Ray Edwards in the second quarter and remained on the turf, clutching his right leg. He had to be helped to the sideline and then was carted to the locker room.
Tampa Bay defensive tackle Gerald McCoy left the Buccaneers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers with a left ankle injury.
McCoy’s left leg bent back violently while defending a running play late in the first quarter. He lay on the ground for several minutes before limping off the field with the help of team trainers.
The former Oklahoma star was selected third overall by the Bucs in 2010, making him the franchise’s highest-drafted interior lineman since they took Warren Sapp 12th in 1995. McCoy finished with three sacks and 22 tackles in 13 games as a rookie.
Colts running back Joseph Addai left Indianapolis’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with a right hamstring injury in the first quarter and did not return.
Addai has a history of injury problems. The only season he made it through without missing a game was his rookie season in 2006.
Bills receiver Donald Jones is out indefinitely after hurting his left ankle in a 31-24 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Coach Chan Gailey couldn’t put a timetable on Jones’ recovery, except to say, “It’s not a year, but it’s going to be a while.”
Jones was carted off from the Bills’ sideline late in the first quarter after making a 7-yard catch off a screen pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick.
An undrafted rookie free agent last year, Jones had taken over the Bills’ No. 2 receiver spot.
