ROME (AP) - Wikipedia is protesting a proposed law in Italy to severely limit publication of wiretapped conversations _ such as embarrassing transcripts of Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s phone chats that have emerged in a prostitution probe.

Lawmakers began debate on the proposal Wednesday.

The proposal would oblige news and other websites to run corrections within 48 hours if the subject of the content claims it is personally harmful. Wikipedia’s Italian site argues there’s no impartial party to decide what constitutes harm.

Other Italian protesters, taping their mouths, have gathered outside Parliament.

Critics contend Berlusconi is more worried about his judicial woes than Italy’s economic crisis. He says the law would protect everyone’s privacy.
