Student who sought advice from Christie loses election
New Jersey sixth-grader Zack Martini experienced a harsh reality check last week when he lost his bid for a seat on the Florence M. Gaudineer Middle School’s student council. The 11-year-old Springfield native, who recently sought N.J. Gov. Chris Christie’s advice on winning the election, said he was “disappointed” about losing to classmate Zoe Frie but wished his rival well.
“Unfortunately, the results from the election didn’t go our way,” Zack’s dad, Ed Martini, told Yahoo! News. “Zack is disappointed he didn’t win, but he wishes the new president, Zoe Frie, the best of luck.”
Earlier this month, the young aspiring politico attended a Union Township town-hall meeting and asked Mr. Christie for some advice on scoring the middle school student government spot.
After chuckling, the governor said, “Make sure that you get a bunch of friends who think you will be the best person for sixth grade to go out there and help you.”
Mr. Christie also advised Zack always to ask potential voters for their vote.
“People like to be asked. … They don’t like to just … take their vote for granted,” Mr. Christie said.
Of course, campaigning goes beyond just talking. Mr. Christie told the boy to have “really colorful posters.”
Responding to audience laughter, Mr. Christie said, “I mean sixth-grade student council, really important to have colorful posters. … Hang ’em up until they tell you to take them down.”
Finally, Mr. Christie told Zack not to make promises he couldn’t keep.
“Because if you do, they won’t be voting for you in seventh grade,” Mr. Christie said.
As reported by Yahoo!, the young student is far from through with his political endeavors.
“He is looking forward to trying again next year,” his father told the website.
’Broke Girls’ cast mates happy for on-screen chemistry
“2 Broke Girls” cast member Beth Behrs has a major girl crush on her brunette co-star, Kat Dennings.
Speaking to New York magazine’s Vulture website, Miss Behrs opened up about the benefits of working on the new sitcom, which drew 19.1 million viewers for its pilot episode last month. Not only has Miss Behrs stepped into the limelight thanks to the show, but she also has gotten close to Miss Dennings.
The 25-year-old, who portrays a formerly wealthy, ditzy new waitress named Caroline in “2 Broke Girls,” was praised by critics for having an easy on-screen rapport with Miss Dennings, who plays a sarcastic, surly server named Max.
In the series, the two become friends after Caroline’s family loses all its money and the lifelong princess is forced to take on a position at a Brooklyn restaurant. The two soon become co-workers and roommates. Because of their different backgrounds, dark-humored Max and perky blond Caroline have different outlooks on life, but they have each other’s backs.
Unsurprisingly, Miss Behrs knew as soon as she met 25-year-old Miss Dennings that they had a connection.
“I’ll be honest with you: From the moment Kat flew in [for a read], we had chemistry,” Miss Behrs told Vulture. “We had a two- or three-month break before we shot the pilot, and I talked to her — if not every day — every other day. Even on hiatus, we still talk all the time. It feels like I’ve known her, like, my whole life.”
Luckily for Miss Behrs, the feeling is mutual. Earlier this month, Yahoo!’s omg! blog interviewed Miss Behrs and Miss Dennings, both of whom had glowing things to say about the other.
“She’s become my best friend,” Miss Behrs told the site. “I really don’t think I could have gone through all this for my first time as a lead on a show without her.”
Miss Dennings agreed: “We’re pretty inseparable at this point. When we’re not working, we really miss each other. We text every day. I can’t imagine what it would be like to work with someone you don’t love.”
ABC News, Yahoo! announce partnership
An executive from ABC News announced on Monday’s “Good Morning America” that the broadcasting company is entering into an exclusive content-sharing partnership with Yahoo!
Similar to the AOL-Huffington Post partnership, this venture will combine two media powerhouses to feature ABC’s news coverage prominently on Yahoo!’s Web portal, which commands an audience of 80 million unique visitors a month. The two companies also will combine bureaus and resources as well as co-produce events, though they will maintain separate editorial control. Before the partnership, ABC News’ website received 20 million to 25 million unique visitors per month.
In a statement, Ross Levinsohn, executive vice president of the Americas at Yahoo! said the partnership would “further strengthen Yahoo! as the No. 1 online news source.”
“ABC News and [President] Ben Sherwood’s vision is completely symbiotic with ours; together we can create highly engaging experiences for more than 100 million users a month that will set the standard for the industry,” he said.
Their partnership began Monday, with Yahoo! exclusively live-streaming George Stephanopoulos’ interview with President Obama.
Combined, the two companies may pose a significant challenge to the AOL-Huffington Post partnership, particularly given ABC’s renowned journalistic powerhouses, including Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer and Christiane Amanpour.
