Penguins’ Crosby to start season on injured list
PITTSBURGH — Penguins star center Sidney Crosby’s return to the ice will have to wait a little longer.
The team placed the former MVP on the injured list Monday, meaning he’ll have to miss at least the first week of the season.
Crosby is continuing to recover from concussionlike symptoms sustained in January. He has been skating with the Penguins since training camp opened but has not yet been cleared for contact. The Penguins open the season Thursday at Vancouver.
• The Chicago Blackhawks agreed with goaltender Ray Emery on a one-year contract. Emery, 29, spent last season with the Anaheim Ducks, going 7-2-0 during the regular season with a 2.28 goals against average in 10 games. He also appeared in six postseason games.

Roddick loses, blows off retirement question
BEIJING — Andy Roddick lost to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 4-6, 5-7 in the first round of the China Open on Monday, a defeat the sixth-seeded American called “unacceptable.” Roddick then walked out of his news conference when asked about any retirement plans.
Roddick, 29, winner of the 2003 U.S. Open, has dropped in the rankings to 15th after several early-round losses this year. He was asked after the match how close he might be to retiring. Roddick rolled his eyes before replying.
“I think you should retire,” he said. He then got up and left the news conference to a round of applause.
On the women’s side, top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki rallied from a set down to beat Lucie Hradecka 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.

NBA negotiators meet again in small groups
NEW YORK — With perhaps days left to avoid further damage to the NBA schedule, negotiators for owners and players were talking again Monday in hopes of ending the lockout.
The sides returned to meet in small groups after taking a day off following labor talks Friday and Saturday. The weekend passed without the “enormous consequences” Commissioner David Stern warned of without significant progress toward a new deal. But they would likely come this week without an agreement. The sides will meet again Tuesday with their full bargaining committees.

Longhorns lose senior safety to broken hand
AUSTIN, TEXAS — Texas senior safety Christian Scott is out indefinitely with a right wrist injury. Scott was hurt in Saturday’s win over Iowa State. Scott was suspended for the first three games after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge.
The injury further hurts Texas’ depth in the secondary as the No. 11 Longhorns (4-0) prepare to play No. 3 Oklahoma (4-0) on Saturday. Another safety, Nolan Brewster, recently gave up football because of concussions and migraine headaches.
