NEW ORLEANS (AP) - For the first time as an NFL head coach, Sean Payton is spending a game upstairs in the booth.

New Orleans’ home game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night marks the first time Payton has coached since breaking his left leg a week ago.

After arriving at the Superdome on crutches, Payton has spent part of the evening in the training room receiving daily treatment and then made an appearance on field level before taking an elevator eight levels up shortly before kickoff.

Payton was in surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee and a fractured tibia on Monday. He returned to work Wednesday evening and watched practice the rest of the week on a motorized cart.

He’s said he won’t bother going to the locker room at halftime.
