For Washingtonians who aspire to live a genteel life in an elegant home, Chevy Chase, Md., may be the perfect neighborhood. The streets of this community of upscale single-family homes are shaded by trees and lined with stately homes, lovely gardens and manicured lawns. In spite of the quiet atmosphere that surrounds these homes, the residences are adjacent to the D.C. border.

The home at 10 Hesketh St., just off Magnolia Parkway, is on the market for $2,250,000. Residents of this English manor home can walk to either Connecticut Avenue or Wisconsin Avenue for shops, restaurants, grocery stores and boutiques or drive to the Beltway or downtown Washington in minutes.

The home includes approximately 4,400 square feet of living space set on a 7,500-square-foot lot. The stucco, brick, stone and timber exterior of the residence is surrounded by professional landscaping, including gardens created by a well-known landscape designer, the late Michael V. Bartlett.

A shared driveway leads to the back of the property and a two-car garage, which has a loft storage area. A pebbled path with a wrought-iron gate links the front and rear gardens. The side entrance to the home has a boxwood garden and rose bushes.

Built in 1928, this home has been renovated but retains the original charm of its prewar architecture. Archways link most of the main-level rooms, which have plaster walls, custom-designed molding, random-width pegged white oak floors and hinged windows with the original brass hardware.

An arched front door leads into the foyer, which has limestone flooring, custom-designed molding and archways to the principal main-level rooms. The formal living room has recessed lighting, a beamed ceiling, two seating areas and built-in bookcases. This room has a wood-burning fireplace with a limestone mantel and a bay-window sitting area with a window seat.

Arched French doors lead into the sunroom, which has limestone flooring with radiant heat, walls of hinged windows and custom-designed molding. Nearby is a bar with glass display shelves, a granite counter and limestone flooring. The adjacent powder room has a pocket door.

Just beyond the bar is the family room, which has grasscloth wallpaper, a wall of built-in bookcases with cabinets, and an entertainment center with a flat-screen television that conveys to the new owners, floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors to the rear garden.

The main level also has a sophisticated formal dining room with arched French doors into the living room, a chandelier, recessed lighting and custom-designed molding. The dining room has a wall of windows facing the garden with a built-in window seat and a swinging door into the kitchen.

The gourmet kitchen gleams with white cabinets, white marble counters, stainless steel appliances and faux-painted maple flooring. In addition to the upgraded appliances, which include a Viking six-burner gas range, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Miele dishwasher; the kitchen has built-in speakers and a built-in cove with a flat-screen television that conveys. The adjacent breakfast area has a wall of windows and a glass door to the rear garden.

Upstairs, the master bedroom suite includes two walls of windows, two closets with built-in shelving, a room-size walk-in closet and a built-in flat-screen television that conveys. The elegant master bath has a soaking tub with a marble surround, a glass-enclosed shower and a marble vanity.

Two more bedrooms on this level both have built-in desks, shelves and cabinets. One of the bedrooms has a flat-screen television that conveys, while the other has decorative glass-paneled doors. These bedrooms share a full bath off the hall.

The finished third level includes a central landing with a hall bath, access to attic storage, another storage closet and a double-door cedar closet. This level has two more bedrooms and an office.

The lower level includes a recreation room with built-in storage benches along one wall, a wood-burning fireplace and built-in shelving. Nearby are a powder room, a storage room and a laundry room.
