ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Oakland Raiders made a bold move to replace injured quarterback Jason Campbell on Tuesday, trading two high draft picks to the Cincinnati Bengals for Carson Palmer.
The Bengals received the Raiders’ 2012 first-round pick and a second-rounder in 2013 for the 31-year-old quarterback who had vowed not to play for Cincinnati despite being under contract through 2014.
The Raiders (4-2) became desperate for a quarterback after Campbell broke his collarbone during a win over Cleveland on Sunday. Campbell had surgery Monday and was expected to miss at least six weeks, leaving Oakland with only Kyle Boller and Terrelle Pryor on the roster.
Raiders coach Hue Jackson was with the Bengals when Palmer had his best season in 2005 when he threw for 3,836 yards with 32 touchdown passes and a 101.1 rating while leading the team to an AFC North title. Palmer tore up his left knee during a playoff loss to Pittsburgh that season.
Palmer, who is coming off a 20-interception season, already reported to the Raiders’ facility and will immediately start learning the offense. Oakland hosts Kansas City on Sunday and then has a bye week.
This is the second trade the Raiders have made since the death of longtime owner Al Davis, who also served as general manager and oversaw the entire football operation. Jackson dealt last week for former No. 4 overall pick in 2009, linebacker Aaron Curry from Seattle.
The trade leaves the Raiders with picks only in the fifth and sixth round in next year’s draft. They traded their second-rounder during April’s draft to New England for the picks to draft offensive lineman Joe Barksdale and running back Taiwan Jones. They used their third-rounder to take Pryor in the supplemental draft in August. They traded their fourth-rounder in 2010 to get Campbell and the seventh-rounder for Curry.
Steelers’ Polamalu given go-ahead to play Sunday
PITTSBURGH — A violent collision with Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew’s churning knees won’t be enough to keep Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu out of the lineup.
Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is “good to go” after passing a concussion test. The team removed Polamalu from the game midway through the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 17-13 win over the Jaguars with concussion-like symptoms.
The nine-year veteran is second on the team with 40 tackles for the NFL’s top-ranked defense.
Lions acquire Brown from Eagles for Harrison
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles traded running back Ronnie Brown to the Detroit Lions for running back Jerome Harrison and an undisclosed draft pick in 2013.
Harrison is starting his second stint with the Eagles. He was first acquired in a 2010 trade with Cleveland and rushed for 239 yards and a touchdown.
Brown had only 13 carries for 38 yards with the Eagles. His fumble against San Francisco cost Philadelphia a win.
Revis’ 100-yard TD return helps Jets throttle Dolphins
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Darrelle Revis ran back an interception 100 yards for a touchdown, and the New York Jets did just enough to beat the Miami Dolphins 24-6 on Monday night and end a three-game losing streak.
Mark Sanchez threw a touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and ran for another score as Rex Ryan’s Jets (3-3) - who called this a “must-win” game - sent the winless Dolphins to their fifth straight loss.

• VIKINGS: The sports agency that represents Christian Ponder has tweeted that the rookie quarterback will start for Minnesota against Green Bay this Sunday. NFL.com first reported that coach Leslie Frazier informed Ponder and veteran Donovan McNabb of his decision. McNabb was benched in Minnesota’s 39-10 loss to Chicago on Sunday night.
• BEARS: A suburban Chicago man was charged with assaulting Bears wide receiver Devin Hester at a casino. Police said Hester was in a cashier line Friday night at the Rivers Casino in Des Plaines when Daniel Rago, 52, slapped the player in the back of the head then walked away. He faces one misdemeanor count of battery.
• BENGALS: Cincinnati running back Cedric Benson was suspended for one game by the NFL for his two misdemeanor assault cases settled before the season. Benson originally received a three-game suspension but appealed.
• JAGUARS: Jacksonville placed oft-injured tight end Zach Miller on season-ending injured reserve. The Jaguars replaced him by signing Martin Rucker off Dallas’ practice squad.
• BRONCOS: Denver defensive lineman Ryan McBean was arrested on suspicion of stalking. McBean turned himself in Friday and is free after posting a $50,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 28.
