LAS VEGAS (AP) - IndyCar will be back in Las Vegas.

The series staged its season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this year in hopes of generating interest in a sport that has lagged in attendance and television ratings. IndyCar added to it by offering $5 million if any moonlighting driver can win the race and had all 34 cars for Sunday’s race take a spin down Las Vegas Boulevard.

Pleased with the reaction even before the race took place, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard announced on Friday that the series would return to Las Vegas for the 2012 season finale. He wasn’t sure if the series would offer the $5 million prize again.

The race, which will feature IndyCar’s new chassis and engines, will be Oct. 14, 2012.
