BRUSSELS (AP) — The continuing resistance by pro-Gadhafi forces in Sirte and other locations in Libya is “surprising” because they are fighting a losing battle, NATO said Tuesday.
Canadian Forces Col. Roland Lavoie, a NATO spokesman, said that instead of opting for a political solution, the former strongman’s troops have chosen to continue fighting and “to inflict pain on the rest of the population in Libya.” But, he said, they no longer can mobilize significant forces or command those forces.
Col. Lavoie said Gadhafi loyalists no longer can be resupplied in the battle for Sirte after the new government’s units won control of key parts of the town’s center.
“So from that perspective,” he said, “it just does not make sense to see what these few remaining forces are doing.”
