LEBANON, N.H. — Having just passed on a run himself, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday threw his support behind Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, saying the former Massachusetts governor was the best person to lead the country on a new course away from the policies of President Obama.
“Americans cannot survive another four years of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is the man to lead America,” the New Jersey governor said at a press conference here at the Courtyard Hanover Lebanon, where he cast Mr. Romney as “the best person to be able to articulate Republican values and beat Barack Obama in 2012.”
The endorsement gives Mr. Romney fresh momentum heading into the debate here Tuesday night, where he will square off with seven of his GOP rivals.
The outspoken Mr. Christie, considered one of the party’s most popular figures, opted against running for president last week — a move that many believed represented a shot in the arm for Mr. Romney, who is looking to solidify himself as the moderate candidate with the best change of beating Mr. Obama in a field heavy with conservatives.
