Police on Friday identified the man killed in a Thanksgiving Day collision in Hyattsville that also left four others in critical condition.
Hyattsville-area resident Fredys Armando Castillo-Giron, 41, died after he and five others were struck by a vehicle that apparently lost control in the parking lot of a Home Depot, Prince George’s County police said.
One man remained in critical condition Friday, while three others were in critical but stable condition, police spokesman Cpl. Mike Rodriguez said. A sixth man suffered minor injuries.
County police investigating the crash were able to rule out alcohol as a factor, Cpl. Rodriguez said. Charges could be filed in the deadly incident.
“It depends on the totality of the circumstances,” Cpl. Rodriguez said.
Hyattsville Police reported that the driver of the vehicle, a man in his 60s, possibly suffered a medical emergency and passed out behind the steering wheel as he drove through the parking lot Thursday afternoon. A passenger in the car tried to grab the steering wheel but the vehicle struck the group of men and eventually a barrier between the lot and East West Highway, Hyattsville Police Department spokesman Sgt. Chris Purvis said.
“I looked like a war zone,” said Sgt. Purvis of the carnage at the scene.
Initially officials speculated that the men might be day laborers, but Friday police officials said they had not determined what the men were doing in the parking lot as the Home Depot was closed for the day. All six of the men lived in the general area and Mr. Castillo-Giron resided about a mile away in the 7400 block 24th Avenue.
