LONDON (AP) - A British university says it can’t confirm the authenticity of thousands of emails apparently leaked from its climate research unit.
The University of East Anglia, which was at the center of the “Climategate” furor two years ago, says it has “no evidence of a recent breach of our systems.”
It said Tuesday that, if genuine, the leak of 5,000 emails appeared to be a “carefully timed attempt to re-ignite controversy” over climate science ahead of U.N. climate talks next week in Durban, South Africa.
The publication in 2009 of some 1,000 emails stolen from the university’s server sparked a storm, with those hostile to mainstream climate science claiming the exchanges between scientists showed that the threat of global warming was being exaggerated.
