Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder made a rare appearance before the media Tuesday, but he declined to offer a statement on the status of his struggling football team.
In attendance for the Redskins’ ninth annual Harvest Feast at FedEx Field, Snyder spent about 40 minutes distributing turkeys to Prince George’s County families in need but said little more than “Happy Thanksgiving” to the recipients before being whisked away.
Redskins Senior Vice President Tony Wyllie said Snyder would not make any comment Tuesday.
Clad in a black Redskins sweatshirt, black Redskins jacket and a Sean Taylor “21” hat, Snyder looked less like a billionaire NFL owner and more like an everyday volunteer.
Most of the people who received a turkey from Snyder had little idea they were in the presence of the owner as they gravitated instead toward general manager Bruce Allen, who gregariously welcomed everyone who crossed his path.
Allen briefly spoke with reporters but brushed away a question about the Redskins (3-7), who are mired in a six-game losing streak heading into Sunday’s road game against the Seahawks.
“We’re here for this event,” Allen said. “We’re focused on Seattle.”
Before the food distribution, Snyder made a few quick comments at a news conference but did not mention football despite being flanked by players Lorenzo Alexander and Oshiomogho Atogwe.
“It’s very moving, as you will see out there, to do something special that takes place here every Thanksgiving,” Snyder said. “I appreciate you all coming out. Thank you.”
NOTE: The Redskins on Tuesday signed running back Evan Royster to the active roster from the practice squad and released running back Tashard Choice.
Royster, who turns 24 Saturday, was a sixth-round pick in last spring’s draft out of Penn State. The Redskins signed running back Tristan Davis to replace Royster on the practice squad.
